Basic Formations

Intro

In the course, we will cover various tactical movement formations used to move from A to B under different circumstances. In real life, this takes long non-stop training before this becomes second nature. Implementing this in a clan and a video game simply doesn't work, so the point of this course is to make you aware of your own positioning within the section and how this increases your survivability and increase chances in a firefight.

Squad Formations

Fire Team Wedge Formation

The most common formation for a fire team is the Wedge formation. This formation consists of a triangle formed of the Fire Team Leader on point with the Support Role(preferably the MG role) on the “weak side” of the wedge. The medic is always in the rear. This formation offers a good mix of security and speed. In this formation, we have front, flank, and rear security. The wedge is normally deployed when there is a possibility of contact.

Fire Team File Formation

The file is used when visibility is low or in environments where it is important that everyone follows the same path. In the file, team members follow one after the other with each sequential team member taking a different direction of security. This formations allows for great firepower on the flanks but lacks firepower in the front. Using the File formation while moving next the hedgerows can be helpful as you can easily break the enemy's line of sight by moving to the other side of the hedgerows.

Fire Team Line Formation

This formation is made of a straight horizontal line of every member of the fire team, weapons facing forward. This formation provides very strong forward security but has no flank and rear security. As such the line is only used to suppress or move directly into forward contact, normally with overwatch from a supporting element.

Squad Formations

Squad Column Formation

The Squad Column Formation is the most common movement formation. It consists of 2 fire team wegdes behind each other, the "weak side" of each wedge is supported by the "strong side" of the other wedge. This formation gives the squad the most flixibilty is most situations and provides good security and firepower on all flanks.

Can be used to find spawn points in dense forests areasa but you can easily beflanked.

Staggered Column Formation

The Staggered Column consists of 2 fire team file formations next to each other in a zig zag pattern. It provides great firepower to the flanks but lacks in the front. Useful in urban settins or with hedgerows on either side as it gives you an easy escape to break to enemy's line of site.

Squad Arrow Formation

The Arrow(head) formation provides a lot of firepower to the front while still provides security on the flanks. Fire teams can easily break off to perform flanking manouvers. Due to the frontal firepower, flank security and the spread of the teammates it's a useful formation to locate spawn locations in dense forest areas.
